The complete guide to having a beautiful Betta and Betta tank.

Red and blue Delta betta

Betta fish, also known as Siamese fighting fish, are aggressive and beautiful fish that you can find in southeast Asian lakes, streams, ponds, marshes and paddy fields.

Tank size:

This depends on how many fish you are going to put in your aquarium. A 5 gallon tank is perfect for one betta, but if you are keeping a Betta with some-example 3 or 4-tank mates, then maybe a 10 or 15 gallon tank is enough.

Tank mates:

  • Cory catfish
  • Neon and ember tetras (Make sure the colors aren't so bright because the Betta might chase it around)
  • Dwarf frogs
  • Guppies (again, make sure the colors aren't so bright because your betta will see it as a competitor)

Do make sure that the Dwarf frogs aren't so small because your betta might bully it and try to bite it if it is too small. Another warning: If you are choosing Guppies or Tetras as tank mates for your Betta, make sure that your Guppies/Tetras are fully grown because Bettas might try to eat the fry.

Honorable mentions:

  • Kuhli loach
  • Harlequin Rasboras
  • Golden algae eater
  • Amano shrimp

How to maintain a clean aquarium:

A good choice to keep a clean aquarium is to clean it weekly and keep a filter (make sure that the filter doesn't pump water in the aquarium so hard because it might stress the betta).

You can also buy some algae eaters such as Siamese algae eaters and Chinese algae eaters. Keep an eye on your Bettas because they might bully the algae eaters which could stress them out.

How to keep a happy betta

Now, a happy Betta equals beautiful betta, so it's a way to check if your Betta is happy (bright, vibrant colors equals a happy betta) or sad (dull, darker colors equals a miserable or  sad Betta) and it's a sign that if you want a beautiful Betta you should keep it happy.

So, I'm gonna tell you ways to keep your Betta happy.

The first way is to play with your Betta. I know it might sound ridiculous, but Bettas are intelligent. Very. Intelligent enough to know who their owner is. So they can be trained to jump and "kiss" your finger and leap through a hoop-this is also counted as playing with your Betta. Here are some ways to play with your betta:

1. Follow your finger

This one is pretty simple. All you need is a bit of fish food, which you place on your finger.
Then, place your finger right in front of the aquarium and patiently wait for your Betta to swim to the front of the aquarium. Then, move your finger around and if your betta follows your finger, reward it by giving it some food.

2. Jumping through a hoop

This is probably one of the hardest tricks, but with patience you probably won't screw up. Anyways, for this trick, you will need a hoop, or a wire that you can fold into a hoop, and place a little food in the middle. If your Betta jumps through the hoop you can reward your fish by giving it a little food.

3. Kissing your finger

You can train your Betta to "kiss" your finger (It's actually just making the fish jump and get food from your hand) by putting a little bit of food on your hand and placing it slightly above the water where your Betta can jump and catch the food from your hand. Or, if you don't want your hand wet you can put the food on a stick instead (though then it won't be called kissing your finger).
